STUDIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Sports in America 56:606:531:J1 SECOND SEVEN WEEKS Course meets 50% in class/50% online Thursday 6:00 AM – 8:40 PM Professor Gayle Smith gaylersmith@msn.com	This course will focus on the historical development of sports in America and examine its impact on American life and culture. Through readings, film, discussion, and assignments, students will get a better understanding of how and why sports have been influenced by or have influenced larger historical themes. We will study the historical context as well as the significance of issues such as race/ethnocoty, gender, class, politics and immigration as they relate to sports in America. Have you ever wondered: * Are sports a microcosm of social issues in our society or a ficilitator of change? * Why are sports so important today? * What role has sports played in the past? What role will it play in the future? In addition to the substantive content, this course will focus on developing critical thinking as well as writing and the correct approach to writing a master’s level research paper: developing a thesis and building a logical, well-written paper substantiating the topic.

ARTS AND LITERATURE

Topics In The American Short Story & Film 56:606:611:j1 FIRST SEVEN WEEKS Course meets 50% in class/50% online W 6:00-8:40 PM Professor Richard Drucker	This course will read short stories written by American authors from the nineteenth through the twenty-first century. We will cover a variety of topics and themes, including, coming of age, gender, race, and community, and will examine how narrative techniques such as plot, characterization, point of view, setting, and style influence our responses as readers of these short stories. We will study the social and political backgrounds of the time periods of the writers and evaluate the role of these stories in the broader contexts of American cultural life. Some of the suthors and styles covered in the course will include realism, allegory, and naturalism in Poe, hawthorne, Hughes, Faulkner, Chopin, Baldwin, Cather and Alexie.
