This course will examine the history of photography from its early foundations during the Renaissance, its invention in the 19th century, its shift from science to fine art, its importance in recording history influence on art theory in the 21st century. We will focus on photojournalism, portraiture, science vs. art, Pictorialism, mass media, and documentary photography, among others. Students will gain a general level of knowledge, understanding and appreciation for the artistic practice of photography and its history. Prior knowledge of Art History is not required.
