Every MALS (but not MINI-MALS) student is required to complete a Capstone as the final project in the program. Capstones are written under the supervision of a faculty Capstone Advisor. In most cases, the Capstone project will be an interdisciplinary study of approximately 25-30 pages in length that demonstrates graduate level research and writing skills. It is also possible to complete a creative, artistic, or other non-traditional Capstone project, though they must be accompanied by a 10-15-page discussion of the conception, context, and meaning of the project.
Steps for Completing a Capstone Project
Step 1: Enroll in the Capstone Tutorial – at least two semesters prior to graduation
The Capstone Tutorial is a self-guided, 0-credit online course that helps you think through key aspects of what goes into writing a successful capstone paper. The course also provides instructions in completing a Capstone Proposal and gives you opportunities to discuss your capstone with Tina Crafton, the Writing Mentor. It is recommended that you take the Capstone Tutorial at least two semesters prior to your anticipated graduation (e.g. in Summer or Fall for May graduates). To enroll in the Capstone Tutorial simply send an email request to Tina Crafton.
Step 2: Submit the Capstone Proposal – prior to the final semester before graduation
A Capstone Proposal is a 300-400-word description of the topic or question you plan to explore, plus an annotated list of at least five good sources that you plan to use. It must be approved by your Capstone Advisor. It is recommended that you start developing the Capstone Proposal yourself, making use of ideas from the Capstone Tutorial (above). Then share your initial draft with a potential Capstone Advisor, who will then help you refine it further. Your Capstone Advisor may be an instructor from the MALS program or another faculty member outside MALS who is expert in your topic. If you need help finding a Capstone Advisor, reach out to MALS Director John Wall.
Once you have developed a Capstone Proposal acceptable to both you and your Capstone Advisor, click here to complete the Capstone Proposal Form. This form is due by the following deadline:

Step 3: Write the Capstone Paper – during the final semester before graduation
During your final semester in the program, register for the 3-credit course Capstone Research (56:606:689). In this course, you meet with your Capstone Advisor on a regular basis to conduct research for the capstone paper, write drafts, and undertake final editing and revisions. Ideally, you will have completed some research into your project prior to this final semester. You can also seek writing assistance from the Writing Mentor. It is your responsibility to meet regularly with your Capstone Advisor and make sure you are receiving the guidance you need.
A final draft of your capstone paper must be submitted to your Capstone Advisor for approval by the following deadline:
-
-
- May graduates: April 24
- October graduates: August 25
- January graduates: December 19
