This new program enables students to take advantage of our courses without committing to a full MA degree. It may be useful for students seeking personal or professional enrichment on particular subjects. Or it may help in developing the softer skills that reports from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Society for Human Resource Management have shown are much sought after by employers, skills such as in communication, writing, creative thinking, teamwork, reasoning, and problem-solving.

Requirements

The Certificate in Graduate Liberal Studies (MINI-MALS) program requires a total of 13 credits. These include the following:

  • the required “Introduction to Graduate Liberal Studies” course (1 credit)
  • plus four other Graduate Liberal Studies courses (12 credits)

All courses for MINI-MALS may be taken online. There is no capstone project. There are no subject area requirements. Academic concentrations are not required, but may be arranged in consultation with the program Director.

Apply for the MINI-MALS program with the regular Rutgers graduate application form

MINI-MALS students may transfer into the MALS program at any time they wish. To do so, complete this form.

Tuition Scholarships

Partial tuition scholarships are available to students taking at least six credits per semester. To be eligible for scholarship aid, prospective students should complete the regular MALS application form, rather than the Certificate application. Certificates will be awarded after 13 credits have been completed, at which point students may decide to continue in the program to complete the masters degree in liberal studies.
